Freewing MiG 29 Red Star V2 twin80mm edf PNP Assembly Guide

Note: This jet is dual 80 mm EDF, not 90 mm. It is PNP: EDFs, motors, ESCs, servos, retracts are pre installed. You only assemble outer airframe parts, install receiver, set up radio, check CG. No glue needed for main assembly, all screw fit.

Tools you need

Phillips screwdriver set (small PM2 / PA3 sizes) Tape / ruler for CG checking 6+ channel radio + receiver (minimum 9 ch recommended for thrust vector version) Two 6S 22.2 V LiPo batteries, EC5 connector (4000 5200 mAh) LiPo charger for 6S packs

Step by step assembly

1. Unbox & full inspection

  1. Lay out all parts: fuselage, main wings, horizontal stabilizers (full motion), vertical fins, pitot tube, small plastic details.
  2. Check EDF fan blades: no chips/cracks; check all servo connectors, retract landing gear movement.
  3. Confirm all servo wires, ribbon cables are undamaged.

2. Install full motion horizontal stabilizers (stabilators)

  1. Turn fuselage belly up.
  2. Insert the horizontal tail rotating shaft into fuselage mounting hole.
  3. Fit retaining ring into horizontal tail groove, align anti rotation notch.
  4. Part tighten PM2×4 mm set screw into retaining ring, slide stabilator onto shaft, adjust position, then fully tighten the set screw.
  5. Repeat for opposite side. Make sure both move freely without binding.

3. Mount vertical stabilizers (fins)

  1. Plug vertical tail servo extension cable to fin servo wire. Do not force pins.
  2. Slide vertical fin into fuselage rear slot.
  3. Secure from below using PA3×10 mm screws.
  4. Repeat for other vertical fin. Check rudder free movement.

4. Install main wings

  1. Slide carbon wing joiner tube through fuselage, equal length sticking out both sides.
  2. Plug wing ribbon cable harnesses from each wing into fuselage main harness. Double check connector orientation, do not bend pins.
  3. Slide left wing onto carbon tube, seat flush against fuselage. Secure with factory anti fall screws. Repeat for right wing.
  4. Tug gently: wings must not shift. Confirm aileron / flap servos move without binding.

5. Small external parts

Fit pitot tube on nose; secure with tiny screw. Attach wingtip missile/pod accessories (snap on / small screws). Route receiver antenna outside fuselage, keep away from power/ESC wires.

6. Radio electronics setup

  1. Mount receiver inside radio bay, secure with foam tape. Keep away from EDF power wires to reduce interference.
  2. Connect all servo harnesses, multi function control box (for retracts, gear doors, thrust vector) to receiver per manual channel assignment.

Typical channel mapping (V2 thrust vector version): 1 Aileron, 2 Elevator, 3 Throttle, 4 Rudder, 5 Gear, 6 Flaps, 7 Vector pitch, 8 Gear doors.

  1. Bind receiver to your transmitter.
  2. Power on (remove EDF safety spinner caps first! Keep hands clear of fans).
  3. Check control surface directions:
    • Aileron: stick right → right aileron up, left down
    • Elevator: pull stick back → elevator surfaces go up
    • Rudder: stick right → rudder moves right
    • Gear switch: retracts go up/down, gear doors open close
    • Thrust vector: elevator stick moves nozzles together. Reverse channels in your transmitter if direction is wrong.
  4. Set servo end points / travel limits so servos do not bind at full stick.

7. Center of Gravity (CG, critical for safe flight)

CG reference: 140 mm (5.5 inch) back from wing root leading edge (without batteries).

  1. Place two fully prepared 6S batteries into battery compartment, adjust forward/back until jet balances level when lifted at CG mark.
  2. If nose drops: move batteries rearward. Tail drops: move batteries forward.

Never fly before verifying CG. Too far aft CG causes violent pitch up and crash.

8. Pre flight ground test (SAFETY FIRST)

  1. Secure jet, keep people/fingers well clear of EDF intakes and exhaust.
  2. Cycle retracts several times; confirm gear doors open/close correctly.
  3. Advance throttle slowly, check both EDF spool up smoothly, no abnormal vibration, no rubbing fan blades.
  4. Test flaps, thrust vector full range.
  5. Set transmitter failsafe: on signal loss, throttle low, surfaces neutral, gear down.

Important tips for MiG 29 V2

  1. This is an advanced twin EDF jet, for experienced EDF pilots only.
  2. Always remove batteries after testing/flying.
  3. If fans vibrate: stop power immediately, inspect blades for damage.
  4. Always refer to original Freewing PDF manual for exact screw part numbers and channel assignment.

 

Do I need to install the EDFs, motors, and ESCs myself?

No, you do NOT need to install EDF units, motors, or ESCs yourself for the Freewing MiG 29 Red Star V2 PNP version.

All of these power system parts come pre factory installed inside the fuselage:

  • Twin EDF fan units
  • Brushless motors mounted into the fans
  • The two ESCs (speed controllers)
  • All internal power wiring is already routed and soldered at the factory.

What you still have to do:

  1. Assemble airframe parts: wings, horizontal stabilators, vertical fins, pitot tube, ordnance pods/missiles
  2. Plug in all the servo harness connectors (wings, tails, retract/gear door unit)
  3. Fit your own receiver in the radio bay
  4. Install your two 6S LiPo flight batteries
  5. Do radio binding, direction check, servo travel setup, set CG, ground test

Only if you crash and damage a fan/motor will you need to remove and replace the EDFs. Out of the box build, power hardware is already done.

Assembly difficulty: Freewing MiG 29 Red Star V2 (PNP)

Difficulty: Moderate Intermediate This is not a beginner ARF jet. Mechanical assembly is straightforward, but radio setup is where most people struggle.

Physical airframe build (hardware / putting parts together)

  • 🟢 Easy: All major power parts (EDFs, motors, ESCs, retracts) are pre installed. No soldering, no gluing.
  • Tasks: slide on wings, plug ribbon cables, fit horizontal/vertical tails, tighten small screws, mount pitot and missiles.
  • Time needed: 45 90 minutes for first time assembly.
  • Risks here: Pin bending when plugging in wing ribbon cables; over tightening small screws and stripping plastic.

Radio & programming work (the hard part)

This is where the difficulty lives, because it is a complex twin jet with extra functions:

  • Twin ailerons, twin elevators, twin rudders
  • Retracts + gear doors
  • Thrust vector nozzles (V2 version)
  • Multiple servo harnesses, multi function control box

You will need to:

  1. Bind receiver
  2. Check every control surface direction, reverse channels as needed
  3. Adjust servo travel / end points to avoid binding servos
  4. Mix settings for thrust vectoring
  5. Set correct failsafe
  6. Set CG precisely (very critical for this MiG 29; wrong CG = instant crash)

If you are familiar with multi channel jets, mixes and telemetry: this is manageable. If you only fly simple 2 4 channel planes: this jet will be overwhelming.

Who this is suitable for

✅ Good for: Pilots with experience flying 70 90 mm EDF jets, understand radio mixes, CG, retract set up.

❌ Not for: First RC plane, first EDF jet, no experience with multi function PNP jets.

Common pitfalls to watch for

  1. Wing ribbon cables: align perfectly, do not force, bent pins = dead wing servos.
  2. Thrust vector mixing: wrong mix will make pitch behaviour crazy.
  3. CG: do not skip it. Too far back leads to violent pitch up on take off.
  4. Ground test both EDFs before every flight to confirm both spool up.

Summary: Screwing parts together is simple. Configuring all the special jet functions is intermediate level. If you have a local RC club, having an experienced jet pilot double check your radio setup and CG before maiden flight is highly recommended.
